This can be caused by injury to the nose, bacterial or viral infections or allergies. Symptoms include blocked nose, pain in the nose and surrounding areas, fever and production of thick nasal discharge. Check food allergies.

Tonsillitis:
Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils. Symptoms include enlarged, red tonsils, sore throat, and difficulty in swallowing, fever, congested chest and nose. Drink lots of water. Increase fruit, vegetable and juice intake. Avoid dairy foods and processed carbohydrates. Have herbal teas, like ginger, honey and peppermint.
Warm tip:
Use essential oils in your baths, massages ( full body or facial ), and while gargling.
Recommended oils:
Eucalyptus, tea tree, lemon.
Helps boost immunity:
Make the perfect massage blend to boost immunity by mixing 20 ml of a vegetable base oil like wheat germ or sweet almond, with 3 drops tea tree oil, 2 drops lemon oil and 3 drops lavender oil.
Pneumonia:
Symptoms of pneumonia include chills, breathlessness, chest pains, cough with phlegm and, sometimes, blood. It can be life-threatening, especially among the elderly. Do seek medical help. Increase fluids, intake of vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables.
Warm tip:
Add essential oils to your bath, inhaled (dry or through steam), or massaged into your body.
Recommended oils: eucalyptus, thyme, tea tree.
Sinusitis:
This can be caused by injury to the nose, bacterial or viral infections or allergies. Symptoms include blocked nose, pain in the nose and surrounding areas, fever and production of thick nasal discharge. Check food allergies. Avoid dairy foods. Cut down on carbohydrates. Have raw green vegetables and fruits. Increase the intake of vitamin A and C. Add more garlic and onion to your diet.
Laryngitis:
This is an inflammation of the larynx caused by a virus, bacteria or straining the voice. Symptoms include pain, hoarse voice, cough and fever. See your doctor. Avoid alcohol and smoking. Drink warm water and soothing drinks. Increase your vitamin C intake.
Warm tips:
Add 2-3 drops of essential oil to warm water in a tea cup, and gargle.
Recommended oils: sandalwood, lavender, and lemon.
Helpful hints:
1.A good diet, sufficient sleep and exercise keep up your immunity levels. Eat plenty of seasonal vegetables. Drink as much green tea as you can.
2.Increase vitamin C intake by having citrus fruits, kiwis, berries, red peppers and tomatoes. Add good sources of zinc to your diet, like oysters, sardines, other seafood and cereals.
3.Keep a positive attitude.
4.A holistic approach (the concept of mind body and spirit ), during winter and, for that matter, any time of the year, will keep you healthy.
To warm cold hands and chilly feet, add 8 drops of your chosen essential oil to 20 ml of vegetable carrier oil. I recommend 4 drops ginger, 2 drops cardamom and 2 drops black pepper. Apply this warming blend to your hands, feet, legs, and arms. It is good for backaches, too.
For supple and glowing skin:
Make a body scrub by mixing 2 cups jiggery with 1 cup olive oil, the juice of a large piece of ginger and a cap full of diced ginger. Using circular motions exfoliate your body, paying extra attention to rough elbows, heels and knees. Rinse with a body wash and wet washcloth. And towel dry.
