31 August 2011(Camili Smith): The best bridge between despair and hope is a good night’s sleep. A good and a long sleep is considered to be the best cures in the doctor’s book.
Do you know? Before the light bulb was invented, people slept 10 hours a night…Over 18 million people suffer from apnoea, a breathing disorder in which there are lapses in breathing as you sleep…About 40% of adults snore…You can die from lack of sleep before you die of starvation. It takes about 2 weeks; lack of sleep proves fatal after 10 days. It takes an average person seven minutes to fall asleep…The average person has five dreams a night. Sleep experts say a good night’s sleep works wonders for you… It keeps you alert when you drive…It keeps you in a good mood all through the day…It helps to boost creativity…It restores, rejuvenates and replenishes the body, mind and spirit…It is the cheapest beauty treatment. A good night’s rest puts a glow on your face and a sparkle in your eyes….To get all these benefits, just sleep through one-third of your life! That is all about 24 years in bed.
*Get the sleep. *Dine early. You cannot sleep well on a full stomach. Try to go to bed by 10 pm. This is when the adrenal glands that regulate the stress hormone, cortisol, recuperate. *Don’t take stimulants, like caffeine or alcohol, close to bedtime. *Avoid hot spicy food at dinner to avoid problems like acidity. *Always wear loose comfortable clothing to bed. *Throw away your old pillows: they may be teeming with dust mites, bacteria and mould. *Invest in a good supportive mattress and crisp cotton sheets. *Turn down the lights. A dim-lit room promotes peaceful sleep. *Before going to bed, spend a few minutes gently massaging your hands, feet and neck. This will offer you relaxation. *In bed, take long, deep, easy breaths, letting go of the day’s stresses. *Always remember to have six to eight glasses of water every day.
If your back aches when you have worked a lot or lifted a load or pushed a car…If your back aches simply from lying prone for eight hours… Here’s what you can do: *Sleep on your side with your legs curled up. Or sleep on your back with a nice fluffy pillow under your knees. This helps to flatten the part of your back which tends to sway in toward your stomach and takes the strain off some of your muscles.
According to Vaastu Shastra, if your head is directed towards the north while sleeping, the north pole of the earth and that of your body repel each other. This affects blood circulation, causing disturbed sleep, tension and other problems. That is why Vaastu Shastra suggests you don’t sleep with your head towards the north. The magnetic field of the earth has a deep influence on human life. Our body acts as a magnet, and the head is as heavy as the north- pole.
