The Karnataka Security Services Association (KSSA), the umbrella organization of all the 200 private security agencies in the state that is striving continuously towards the welfare of private security sector and society, in an attempt to recognize the efforts and services of the unheralded private security personnel, has declared August 21, 2011, as the ‘Private Security Day’.

This is the first of its kind initiative by any agency or association in the country. Thousands of private security personnel representing several agencies from across the state will congregate in Bangalore on August 21, to take part in the ‘Private Security Day’ celebrations. The KSSA has taken the lead by coming up with such an initiative, which is being replicated by other states.

“There is Armed Forces Day in India in recognition of the contributions made by the security personnel to the nation. Similarly, there is the National Fire Services Day. But the private security sector, which is one of the largest employersin the nation and the fastest growing, has no particular day dedicated in honour of the security personnel. Therefore, we decided to declare August 21 as the Private Security Day,” said Flt Lt K P Nagesh, President, KSSA.

The Central Association of Private Security Industry (CAPSI) is elated over the initiative. ”It is indeed an honour and pride for CAPSI to be associated with KSSA and our Karnataka Chapter in taking part in a laudable initiative. I on behalf of CAPSI and the Association of Private Detectives and Investigators (APDI) extend full support to KSSA in celebrating Private Security Day. I wish KSSA success in all its endeavours, and hope that they will bring greater laurels to the entire private security sector,” said Kunwar Vikram Singh, Chairman-CAPSI & APDI.

‘Private Security Day’ will be annual affair from the next year onwards. The objective of the ‘Private Security Day’ is to recognize the services of the private security personnel and to create awareness about them among the public.

“There is a misconception that security personnel merely execute watch and ward responsibilities. But they have stepped further toactively support the government in effective management of internal security as a helping hand to the police; in disaster management and other activities. The threat perceptions are changing fast, and we are instilling professionalism into the sector by providing advanced training to our security personnel” Nagesh added.

There are more than 5 lakh security personnel in Karnataka, employed by approximately 200+officially recognized private agencies. It is also one of the largest employers, with the sector growing at a faster rate of 30 per cent annually. Real estate, banking, hospitality, education, infrastructure, retail and housing ventures are some of the sectors that employ private security personnel in large numbers.

“The private security sector was in the nascent stage two decades ago. However, it is now an established sector, governed by the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act 2005. We have a vital role in the nation’s growth. Therefore, we deemed it necessary to have a Private Security Day” Nagesh pointed out.

HIGHLIGHTS OF PRIVATE SECURITY DAY

• Procession by 1,500 private security personnel from Town Hall junction to Shikashakara Bhavana on Kempe Gowda Road
• Cultural troupes to perform colourful folk arts as part of the procession
• 5 awards of 5 different categories will be presented to 5 agencies.
• Awards of Excellence will be presented to distinguished police officers

      Mr. T. Suniel Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police, Bangalore City and Mr. Gurukiran, acclaimed music composer will flag off the procession at 9:30 am.

      Mr. R. Ashoka, the Honourable Minister for Home & Transport, Government of Karnataka, will declare August 21 as the ‘Private Security Day’.
