One of the lures of Yucatan real estate is the rich interaction with Mayan culture offered by the area.  Most recently, this was exemplified in the celebration of the Mayan New Year.  This type of event offers buyers one motivation to consider buying real estate here and living here.

One manifestation of this even took place in the capital city of Merida.  With the participation of hundreds of children from throughout the state, Governor of the State of Yucatan, Ivonne Ortega, planted a ceiba tree (which is very common in the area and was sacred in ancient traditions) in the grounds of Science and Technology Park of Yucatan, where a new generation of researchers promise to build a better future.

Accompanied by the Director of the Institute of Culture of Yucatan (ICY), Renan Guillermo, the governor witnessed a ritual led by a Mayan priest, Idelfonso Cocom, who purified the site with incense and fire, in an environment full of mysticism, and then invited the governor to bring the sacred ceiba to the shrine.

"It's a very significant act to plant ceiba tree,” explained the governor.  “It is the tree that embraces life as the Maya, we are beginning a new year and here in the Science Park it will mark the return to science, technology, architecture as a positive sign for the future of this undertaking.”

American and Canadian expats generally appreciate this kind of event, giving a distinct lifestyle flavor, which combines with the visual appeal of a colonial city.  Merida and other communities in Yucatan are unique in that they are one of a few places that combine the living traditions of colonial Mexico and Mayan culture with modern conveniences and easy access.

The event, held at the beginning of the New Year under the Mayan calendar, was attended by children from all 106 municipalities of Yucatan, who brought soil from and water from their communities to plant the ceiba.  The water was brought form local “cenotes” which are natural pools which likewise held a sacred role in ancient Mayan culture, and currently present an attraction for viewing, swimming and diving.

The land where the Science and Technology Park is currently under construction brings together federal, state, universities, academic and research work, through which Yucatan has become the second state in Mexico to have a park of this size as part of strategy to bring development through science.

The event truly represents the combination of ancient and new, tradition and modern-ness which Yucatan offers real estate buyers.
